How to convert WebP to PNG
Drop the WebP image onto the box above, or click to pick one from your device. The tool shows the size and dimensions, converts on your click, and shows the PNG size before you download it. The image is decoded and re-saved entirely inside your browser tab, so nothing is uploaded and there is nothing to wait for.
When WebP to PNG is the right move
WebP is everywhere on the modern web because it makes pages fast, but it is still a stranger outside the browser. You feel that the moment you save an image from a website and try to use it somewhere real: the photo editor says unsupported format, the presentation tool refuses it, the printer software ignores it, and the form you are filling in only lists JPG and PNG. Converting to PNG ends all of that. PNG is supported by effectively every program made in the last twenty five years.
PNG is also the right target when you plan to edit. It stores every pixel losslessly and keeps transparency intact, so a WebP graphic with a see through background becomes a PNG with the same clean edges, ready for annotation, compositing or print.
How the conversion works
Your browser already knows how to display WebP, so it decodes the file into its full grid of pixels, then writes those pixels out as a PNG. Because PNG encoding is lossless, the copy is pixel perfect, including the alpha channel that carries transparency. Metadata from the WebP does not carry across, which also makes this a handy way to get a clean copy of an image you saved from the web.
Practical tips for WebP to PNG
- Convert the largest version you can get. Websites often serve several sizes of a WebP. Open the image full size before saving it, so your PNG starts from the best pixels available.
- Expect bigger files. A photo style WebP can grow three to five times as a PNG. That is the format working as designed, not a problem with your image.
- Use PNG as the editing master. Once converted, do your cropping and annotation on the PNG and export sharing copies as JPG at the end.
- Check transparency after converting. If the WebP had a transparent background, the PNG keeps it. Preview on a dark background to confirm before using it in a design.
A worked example
A teacher downloads diagrams from a course website for her slides, but they save as WebP and her slide software will not insert them. She converts each one here: a 140 KB WebP becomes a 720 KB PNG that drops straight into her deck with its transparent background intact, so the diagrams sit cleanly on her colored slides.
If the destination only accepts JPG, the WebP to JPG converter makes smaller files instead. The Image Converter covers all directions between JPG, PNG and WebP.
